Hey Tom. Let me see if I can do this for you.

.net is a couple things. Conceptually, it is an idea that applications can
work together more efficiently, and that they can be delivered in different
ways without changing a whole lot of code, and regardless of the programming
language you use.. In practice, this works very well.

If you think of building applications like building a house, then the concept
of .NET is the foundation for the application. Now, the concept of inter-connectivity
is executed through the .NET Framework. The Framework is a who bunch of code
that makes basic things easier to do. Many things that you used to have to
figure out by hand, like manipulating strings, are much easier in the Framework.

Going back to the house metaphor, the Framework is like the Frame of the
house. Now, MS has built the foundation and framed it up for you, but you
still have to add the electrical, plumbing, fixtures, drywall, and paint.

Hopefully that was pretty jargon-free. Let me know if you want more information.
I'm a moderator on the Forums over at www.asp.net, which is a great place
to get info.
