I think the Eckel book is best as an intro, and you can download it for free
from the previous URL. You can buy it too from Amazon, etc.

I'd also recommend Core Java 2 from Horstmann and Cornell as a good learning
/ reference book. You can reference the APIs from the sun API docs.
