After reading a number of the postings, I too agree that I will not re-hash
the same old arguments, nor will I Rant.
Well, maybe I will!
*** ANTI-TRUST ***
I'm getting tired of everyone trying to use the great laws of this great
nation to hinder what has been one of the great success stories of the 20th
century. If ANYONE could do it as well as Microsoft can, they would. Although
I will attribute some of their success to great marketing, their products
are amongst the best at all times. Microsoft finds ways to make the products
easier to use, more intuitive, and more powerful with each release. All this
without holding a gun to anyone's head. No one is being told they have to
buy Windows, or that they have to use IE as a browser. Just like no one is
saying you have to use AOL as a provider, but obviously Millions of people
do. I have yet to see the blood thirsty lawyers put their briefs together
from n number of states saying that AOL is putting countless ISP's out of
business everyday (which they are). It's called business. Survival of the
fitest. If anyone could put together a set of development tools that resemble
the ease of use of Microsoft's Visual Studio but for Linux, you could see
a leveling of the playing field, naturally. I think the government, especially
the states is way out of line and should pay attention to more important
things. Again, i can't name one consumer that was HURT by Microsoft. As far
as Vendors being forced to SELL Microsoft products - ooooohhhhh - "I DON'T
WANTTO MAKE MONEY" - how ignorant.
*** STANDARDS ***
I agree that standards are important, but not at the risk of advancing technologies.
I believe that there will be a new technology that emerges within the next
5 years that will completely erase HTML. It will be as light, as simple,
and yet offer full Object Oriented Development. As bold as that statement
may be, it is true of many young developers, that believe they will create
the next great medium. Forcing us NOW or in the FUTURE to use a lower end
standard so that a cell phone or a toaster can pick-up cbs.sportsline.com
for the latest Vince Carter highlight is absurd. We are advancing at such
a rapid rate technologically it is almost insulting to think that we propose
that forward thinking companies and developers should have to throttle back
to a dergaded version of HTML and CSS for the good of who?
*** Open Source ***
Someone please explain the good that can come out of opening my source code
to someone else. How do I make any money? How do we get STANDARDS from that?
75 flavors of Linux floating around, yeah, thats makes sense. I wish I was
developing for that. Web developers have it bad? And for the rocket scientists
at SUN - hey JAVA would work great if you wrote a common language to sit
on top of each OS. This may sound silly, but if they would have not tried
to replace MS and everyone else and said "Hey, we have a language engine
that we need to work on top of your OS", and then stayed up to date with
OS changes, it would work. They might even try proposing to the OS Manufacturer
that here are the 2000 instructions, make it fit your OS. Again JAVA is only
supposed to be a language. Borland C++ develops apps just as well as MS Visual
C++. See it is a language not an OS replacement.
*** LASTLY ***
Although I don't agree with Glenn Davis (nor does a lot of other people)
on this issue, I can appreciate his point of view. I thank eveyrone for providing
a forum to let me get these topics off my chest.
