I currently hold an MCP in VB6 and my 1998 MCSD has expired. While I learned
a lot from preparation for the exams, I also have 15+ years experience to
back my certifications up. I was extremely annoyed to see that literally
anybody with a good memory and a set of Transcender exams could get the same
cerification. I met several people with MCSDs and MCP + Internet certifications
who had no practical experience and who were subsequently very disillusioned
when their dreams of landing $100K jobs vapourized. In fact most were barely
able to land the lowliest of entry-level positions.
I uses to hold a Certifed Human Resources Professional certification and
that. to me, was more meaninigful in that it had a minimum experience requirement
as well as an academic requirement and the more you had of one, the less
you needed of the other. But you could not get a CHRP without at least a
year of experience (may have been 2 years). I think IT certifications should
have similar requirements for real (not practicum or summer jobs) documented
"for blood" experience. Of course, that would mean that the certifying bodies
would have to examine a candiates credentials instead of just swiping their
credit card and collecting the fees.
