It all depends on what plays out in the wireless market.. There is the Ricochet... however, RIM has an OEM component for their device and a new player in Ground based wireless is COMDEV http://www.comdev.ca they have a new system called Mergy coming out that is a 2.4 MB wireless modem running over CDMA compliant cellular base stations. I think the next 2 years will be very interesting. The attached message is something I wrote for a bullboard a couple of days ago, PLEASE ignore the stock stuff, this post is not being used to push a stock. ----------------------- 1. Television, companies like activate.net and blackholetv.com ... nbc, abc you can get streaming video at 56k let alone 2 MBs. You could be sitting with your mergy enabled pda and watching a horse race in australia (and betting on it) while sitting in your doctor's office. 2. TV reporters could be running around with little mergy enabled CCD cameras with realtime broadcasting of video, right to your desktop. Just think people who are confined to bed could have someone go out for them and have virtual experiences by asking them to point the camera. Football players could each have a device on them with a camera in their face mask. You could literally surf to the players of your choice and see and hear the world from their point of view. Court room drama, for real!!! What is that party house that that basketball player is involved in... you literally have to wait for someone to walk into the room for it to be interesting. Just imagine living a day in the life of your favorite celebrity from their eyes. 3. Mergy would be perfect for the automotive industry, surfing while driving, 1000s of CD quality radio stations to choose from. Play the song you want, when you want. Integrate the access with GPS directions to get up to date information and restaurant reservations while you are mobile. That exists now, however, bandwidth is an issue. To have this all converge into something that you could do all of this and then get a no charge phone call (voice over IP) from England and your kids in the back watching cartoons... I wonder how we ever lived without it. This technology, whether it is COMDEV / Qualcom / Ricochet / Motorola / RIM / Lucent / Nortel / 3COM / Cisco / Wi-Lan / Moby Dark / UBS / CDMA / TDMA / OrthagnalMDMA or whatever hybrid of all of the above is inevitable and required. The end result is everything in this world will have an IP address (including the lightbulb in your bedside lamp) We have only seen the tip of the iceberg. I just personally believe that if a bunch of these guys are actually producing commercially viable "Space Stuff", this ground based wireless must be fairly straight forward (a matter of man hours). I would assume that with space technology you have to get it right the first time, there is no second chance (eg Hubble Telescope $$). They will most likely get it right the first time. The only downside is if someone else does it better and faster and the only competition I can think of is RIM and if RIM comes up with similar or better technology... If you guys can think of anyone else who is doing this or doing it better... please tell me and I will diversify my risk, otherwise I am sticking with COMDEV These guys have 1. Been a success and failed once only to come back a second time (if we were to personify this, it generally takes an entrepreneur 1 or 2 times before succeeding) 2. Not been hyping their wireless side as to create an artificial increase in the stock price (old adage 2 bulls on the top of a hill one says lets RUN down and $#@% a cow, the other says, no lets WALK down and ^%$% them all.) I believe they are earning their stripes. Look at what has happened to the NASDAQ, does a sharp increase help us in the long run....YAH..of course it does 8^). But seriously, the only reason I don't post much is that I am "Really" long. I don't need to hype it to myself or others, it will be successful (if it works that is.. and none of us know that). I respectfully submit this, I hope that I have not broken any BullBoard etiquette. If I have, please forgive me. I just think this technology is soooo cool.
