list of documents within a folder

Preferably using JavaScript, how can I extract a list of excel files which
exist within a folder?

Currently, I can click on a link to a folder, but the listing of documents
within that folder doesn't look nice at all. So, I was hoping to pull the
list of documents into a preformatted page. This would obvioulsy have to
be a dynamic page, so that it would show me the most updated list of documents
within that folder.
