Silence detection during recording

Hi,

I want to detect silence during recording (thru mic and sound card). The main objective is to automatically pause recording process when silence is deteced.

Would be grateful, if anybody can help by providing sufficient information or link.

If there is any sample code available on the net, kindly let me know.
