Enough Language Bigotry!

The first rule of conduct in “professional programming” is to avoid language
bigotry. Each and every language has its own purpose and design. A language
is a tool in the programmer’s hands. Can you imagine a carpenter arguing
with other carpenters why a hammer is better than a chisel? Obviously not…if
you are so “hung up” on language bigotry and or language superiority, you
might want to think about your motives or reasons. Most bigots are simply
confused and ignorant about the facts. Grow up.

This is a very good point. I've seen it lead to programmers trying to bang
in a nail with a saw. I think it is generally caused be a lack of knowledge.
if someone knows one language very well but not others they tend to be
biased towards that language. Once they gain a knowledge of other languages
this bias tends to disappear.

is the first rule of conduct amongst professional programmers. Language
bigotry is not explicitly opposed. It could be interpreted as such, but
that leads to more subjectivity and "discussion."

If they only had, but they are not. Smalltalk is typeless and doesn't
require you to explicitly define your methods as overrideable.

I appreciate your support. It’s good to see reasonable minds at work. In
response to other replies, I was NOT trying to insult anyone. That would
obviously forfeit what I was trying to say and my point in general. I won't
respond to any flames about this, there is no need for it. I have better

in their right mind could possibly WANT to program in that
God-forsaken language known as C....

Mike, do you enjoy playing computer games or video games in general? Well,
virtually every single game...such as Quake and Unreal have been programmed
in the C and C++ languages (with some assembler). The Microsoft Windows operating
systems, MAC OS, UNIX etc....ALL products of the C and C++ programming languages.
C and C++ are here to stay. Real languages for REAL programmers....oops!
That slipped out too...hee-hee. Oh yeah, honest to God, one of my well respected
programming teachers in college once told me "A Visual Basic programmer is
NOT a real programmer...just someone who knows how to use a fancy editor
well.". Hmmm, he could have just had a bad day...but who knows? ; )

amounts to "not much">, he/she is clearly an idiot suffering from some

I shudder to think what kind of programmers a blithering moron like that
produces. If a programmer reaches for C++ when asked to create a
non-performance critical Windows front-end instead of Visual Basic or Delphi
is _not_ a good programmer.

A good programmer uses the right tool for the job.
