Make C# like Java and dumbing down Visual Basic

Eric,

To me, the writer using the phrase "dumbing down Visual Basic" is inaccurate.
What the writer goes on to say is more language features, such as templates,
will be added to C#. I heard that long ago. So, I guess the writer sees adding
features to C# and not adding them to VB.NET as "dumbing down Visual Basic."
In reality, nothing is being removed. It is like saying C is "dumbed down
C++."

My ten cents...(due to inflation).

This smacks of the author not understanding anything about the .NET
framework, or how any of the languages fit in the overall picture.

In reality, the only way they could "dumb-down" VB would be to remove
functionality from VB.NET when VB.NET 2 is released. What point would that
serve? Sure, C# may well get support for Generics and suchlike - but if
VB.NET doesn't get that support is it really "dumbed-down"?

However, that said, I fully expect to see a "dumbed-down" VB (a la VBA) for
scripting purposes in host applications.

VB has been 'tailored' to RAD since V1 and still is in .Net, so your
enjoyment is just as ridiculous as the thought processes of the author who
wrote this.

It depends on the project as well.

At the corporate level, I found this type of attitude toward VB (simple language)
to be very prevalent with management. In the past, I had several managers
tell me that since I knew how to write applications using VB I should be
able to pick up Excel VBA, Access VBA, ASP/VBScript etc. in about a week.
From a syntax standpoint they may have been correct in their assumptions,
however, that doesn't mean I could have written a complex desktop application
or Web based application after one week. IT recruiters seem to be a little
smarter in regards to software development. One guy (pretty well known) once
asked me if I could master C++ in two weeks. I suppose he gave me that extra
week because he knew the language is a little more complex than VB. ;-)

Personally, I don't think Microsoft is trying to kill classic VB entirely
or dumb down VB.NET. Instead they seem to be trying to get the numerous small
shops and companies that currently use VB, Access, or some other variation
of VBA to eventually buy into the .NET framework. Perhaps this is why Microsoft
is trying or is going to promote VB.NET's RAD features?

While VB allows you to develop certain applications faster than most other
development languages (which should be a good thing) because it is considered
to be a RAD tool it also seems to promote a ready, fire, aim approach to
application development (which is a bad thing imo).

OT: If there was a survey that broke down two and n-tier software systems
by the type of programming language that is being used, I bet nowadays the
order would be C++, Java, with VB coming in third. It seems as if most corporations
gave up on VB several years ago after finding out that an overly expensive
one week VB training course wasn't turning their mainframe programmers into
top flight Windows developers.

I wonder anyway how could be marketed those so called non RAD products, SAD
perhaps. Do you know happy users of those SAD products ? <g>
