DevX Announcement--Changes to Newsgroups
DevX will soon be making changes to the operations of these forums. These
changes are significant, so please take a moment to read DevX's announcement

"A few of us who do not make daily use of these forums felt it was important

Dilbert material, for sure.

I know what you mean... I personally will probably never visit these
groups again once it moves to a http interface. http interfaces are
just to cumbersome.

Ditto. Even the best/fastest web interface is slow and clucky
compared to a real app. Oh well, I'm sure I'll see some of you on the
microsoft.public.dotnet.* newsgroups.

Once the NNTP feed is cut off, I will not visit the HTTP feed! As currently
I can get both the DevX & Microsoft NNTP feeds in my newsreader, I'm not
going to bother going to some web page to spend significantly more time
trying to find unread messages, just so DevX can have Avatars & other cutesy
crap.
Personally I feel it will be DevX's lost!!
This reminds me of the Edge forum (Synon 2E AS/400 products). They were
using one company's HTTP forum software, they upgraded to the fancy HTTP
forum software (which supported Avatars & cutesy crap). Almost immediately
99% of the users swamped Edge to change it back, I want to say by the end of
the day the original software was back, definitely by the end of the week it
was changed back. Edge spent a month or two getting to know their customers
and how they were actually using the forum and found a package that was
closer to what their customers needed.

I agree. It's just to inconvenient.

Looking at the responses so far, I think you're right.

Well, maybe the folks at devx will get the hint - we don't want no
stinking http inteface!

So... you didn't learn anything from watching CompuServe die an agonizing
death, eh? Fluffy style over substance is what your telling us. Not for
me. I haven't got time to wade through the thick syrup. When you turn off
the nntp forums, you're turning off convenience and swift ease of use, and
therefore, discouraging their use by top-notch, quality, results-oriented
people. All you'll have left is Mike Mitchell. <g> (Sorry. Just couldn't
resist.)

Be honest... this place is hardly worth visiting as it is. Switching to
a web interface will only complete the slow death these groups have been
experiencing.

I fully agree with you Tom; I for one will not be making the switch from
NNTP to HTTP. The killer feature for the NNTP groups is the ability to be
able to syncronise it locally so I can read it offline. Without that
ability, I won't be using these groups again.

Thanks for the notice Russell.
IMO, DevX has effectively chosen to kill off what is left of the communities
that formed around these newsgroups. Some were probably dying anyway but the
HTTP-only decision extends that fate to all the others.
Good luck.

Just had a thought. If you provide an RSS feed, you may still be able to
keep some members of the community happy.

PS Most users filter out ads and pop-ups/unders etc anyway (Mozilla makes
that insanely easy), what then is the point of an HTTP-only system?

Whatever is the problem? Clearly, NNTP, an obsolete technology
originating in the 80's and based on an even moldier 60's hack,
is long overdue for a complete overhaul to meet rising demands
for object-oriented, multithreaded, web-based messaging solutions.
Just think of the new HTTP webservice newsgroups as... NNTP.NET!

Why, yes, let's get rid of this thing that has worked fine for years just
the way it is, and replace it with something else just because it's old
fashioned. We must use the latest technology.
How funny they are migrating to a PHP/MySQL alternative. From the vBulletin
site: "[the vBulletin] solid back end technology allowed us to develop a
product that is both blisteringly fast, yet amazingly stable").
Message received loud and clear, DevX.

Same here... I am also not going to visit web-based forums. Regarding
MS newsgroups, I myself don't go there much... they are always flooding
with technical QAs...
I will surely miss this one where ppl were always fighting.... Its
always a fun to watch nice fight :-)

And another point that has been hinted at but needs reinforcing: Some of us
(maybe the majority of the world) still only have dial-up internet access.
Out here in mid Wales - very isolated in European terms - we don't have
access to DSL, and ISDN is prohibitively expensive for small businesses, so
all we have is dial-up. Consequently we have a very real requirement that
bandwidth use is kept as low as possible for any internet resource to be
worthwhile. Web-based groups might be irritatingly slow for many, but
they're impossibly slow for poeple like us.
