Please help,

I am connecting to an oracle 8 database. The sql statement looks like "select
xnum,ynum,sstring from xxxx". The problem is if i go have fields that are
number, the select does not work. If I use to_char(xnum) as xnum, the select
works. Please help what am I doing wrong?
