terminology for Java free distributed sofware?
I am writing a paper on open source and open standards and have a difficulty naming Java's position .
While java is not open source beacuse of its licensing, itsis still freely distributed and free of charge to use. the whole industry is building systems based on free java.
I am looking thus for the best terminology for this kind of products. is it a
freely distributed software,
or something else
I don't think there is a single word or small set of words to describe it.
Sometimes Java isn't free. Vendors do pay for somethings.
And the term Java itself needs explanation because it can refer to the platform or the language.
Poke around java.sun.com and see what you can come up with.
i am wondering under which conditions vendors do have to pay for java,
Ask Sun or check out their site.
I've not had to. But I think IBM and ... , do pay something for something.
