    makefile - missing separator

I am trying to compile a JNI example from:
    http://java.sun.com/developer/online.../jniexamp.html

    Using this make file:
    gcc -o libnativelib.so -shared -Wl,-soname,libnative.so
    -I/export/home/jdk1.2/include
    -I/export/home/jdk1.2/include/linux nativelib.c
    -static -lc

    I get this error:
    makefile:1: *** missing separator. Stop.

From what i read, this error is caused by using spaces instead of tabs in the 'blank' spots, or possibly vice-versa. I've tried replacing all the spaces with tabs and then all the tabs with spaces, but either way it doesn't work.

    What can I do?
    Thanks.

    things to try

Make sure you use a pure text editor (VI for example, compared to staroffice, VI is a pure ascii text editor)

Make sure there is exactly one space between items

    thanks.

the answer is that this is not a makefile at all, just a compile statement
