VB6 - VB.NET - VB Express

Hi,

Aside for the Framework, can anyone tell me the major differences between the old VB6 and the current VB.NET and the new VB Express ?

Is the VB.NET about the same as VB6 ?

Is VB Express the same as VB.NET ?

Is VB.NET on the way out for VB Express ?

VB express is VB.net. VB express is just the name of the Open source IDE for vb.net developers. Between vb and vb.net, use vb.net. VB 6 is all but dead and inferior in every aspect from execution speed to flexibility.

I believe this is all together arrogant and uncalled for. VB6 is not dead. I have applications that gross millions of dollars using VB6. VB.NET is not the answer to all things. In fact, I find things about it which are toally unacceptable for my uses. VB6 works just fine.

well fact is that new projects should preferably be written in VB.Net Vb6 should be used for maintenace purposes

however i run already in some problems with the above in mind

The memory footprint of a plain win forms VB.net application is +- 14 MB !!!!

when you need to support older computers ( win 95 , 98 , ME )
you run in serious problems ( 95 is even impossible )

So in these cases i grab back to good old always working Vb6 :-)


i use now the folowing guide lines :

web applications VB.Net

Programs that i write for customers from who i know they all use win 2000 or higher VB.Net

Programs that i write for customers from who i know they might use computers below win 2000 VB 6

program that needs to be distributed to customers from who i don`t know the operating systems VB6.

They try to tell you that VB6 is dead however i feel that as long there are still pre win 2000 computers out there VB6 still clames it place in the programming world

Another point for Vb6 is that it is proven technology "we" all know what it can and can`t

what speaks for VB.Net is that it is the future , and that it is a verry powerfull language so i would say if you are a student and expect to have a learning curve of +- a year focus completely on VB.Net

However if you are a enterprise programmer focus on both
