You are supposed to ask this question on Unix/Linux forum, not on this careers
forum. I have never successfully used the ftp command on Linux but it seems
you will need to know the server name that you are trying to transfer files
between, since the command is >ftp [options] [hostname]. Type >help ftp
or >help to get the basic info. then play around with it and then ask for
help on a Unix/Linux message board. I tried to get it to work once and had
no success also, so good luck.

You also need to make sure that you have read/write and perhaps execute permissions
on your account or group account for that directory on the server that you
are trying to ftp with. The permissions for that directory would be listed
    with that directory.
