Post subject: Good Java(?) Image Display Script?

I'm wanting to set up a web page where by a series of images are displayed within a central "working" area. At biggest, a single image may fill the entire area, at smallest there may be 2 or 3 images displayed within the area. The images should fade in and out.

Does anyone know of a Java Script to achieve this or would it be easier to contruct this using Flash?
