JCanvas?

Hello

I've been told never to mix Swing and AWT components. This implies that Swing can do everything that the AWT could. But I can't find any replacement for the canvas object from the AWT in Swing... what should I use if I want to make a drawing pad?

Swing is based on AWT. I.e. almost every swing class is a subclass of AWT class.
Not sure you want to, but fear no from such a mix
