    Applet problem

How would I make an applet that opens a JFrame, then allows you to leave the applet's webpage without closing said JFrame?

not too sure that you can, when you close the webpage, then you are effectivly quitting the application all together, which would include the JFrame

an application has certain access to the harddrive and system of the end-user. That access is not wanted by applets on the internet for obvious security reasons. If you could open an application from an applet, then the whole security purpose would be useless. Therefore, I don't think you can do that.
