I made my own program and it wouldn't run, so I download one from here and still just got a grey screen where the program should be. I executed the java file to get a class file, then I made an html file with the applet code to run the class file that I made.
Am I missing something here, or is it a setting in my browser?
Yu mean you compiled it, right ? You should post your code (java & html) so we
can have a look at it. Right away it seems like your applet has problems starting/initializing.
