    Java vs. .Net. A questionnaire

    Good time of the day.

Here is a little questionnaire made for the research. If you have time, please answer it. Hopefully that will be interesting for everybody. The questionnaire doesn't touch technical issues of comparison of those two framevorks, but focus on the statistical factors and personal perception.

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Do you have experience in both frameworks (J2EE and .Net)
Yes. 5+ years Java, 2.5+ years in .NET (C#).

    2. Which of them do you use currently (recently)
Both. .NET by choice, Java by necessity.

    3. Which language - Java or any of .Net languages - you find to be easier to learn
I found C# easier but probably because I already knew Java and some C++.

    4. Which language - Java or any of .Net languages - you find to be easier to program
C# thanks in main to the excellent VS.NET IDE.

    5. Which of the frameworks usually takes you less time to develop an application
    .NET.

    6. Using which language - Java or any of .Net languages - you prefer to use
C# .NET. I just find the language more natural and the libraries much better designed. Again, VS.NET helps a lot too.

    7. Which framework from your point of view has better development environments
I think I've made my love of VS.NET clear

    8. For which framework you managed to find more third-party components (both free and commercial)
    Java.

    9. For which framework you managed to find more free third-party components
    Java.

    10. Which of the frameworks you think to be dominant in near future
    .NET, especially as Mono matures.

    11. Which of the frameworks would tend to reduce in near future
None significantly. Not in the near future anyways.

    12. Which of the frameworks you found to be more suitable for development desktop applications
.NET by far. Really, really far.

    13. Which of the frameworks you found to be more suitable for development database applications
"Database application" is very non-specific. Java is strongest on the server. There are probably more libraries etcetera to help with DB applications. That will change though.

    14. Which of the frameworks you would recommend to study in universities
.NET. IMHO, .NET is a better designed VM and is language-neutral.

    15. Which of the frameworks you are going to use in future
    Both.

    HTH,
    Kent
