Opening MS Office Documents in browser

In a web based application, Is there any way to open a MSWord document (doc / excel) in a section of jsp page, with all the word options (menus and toolbars) so that user can edit it once dowloaded?

your browser needs some plugin which will show up the toolbars too. for ms word or excel, you need an office installation on the client machine to integrate into IE (only). adobe has a pdf plugin which shows up the toolbars. you would need to write one to perform similarly. if you ask me, it is not worth all the effort, or atleast java is not the best way to do all this.

Currently, i need java based solution.
any idea on how to invoke those plug ins from a html page?
I have a requirement where all the docs will be listed in left frame, user will select one and contents of selected document will be listed on right frame on the same page.

You don't need to invoke plugins from Java code. They need to be installed in the client browser.

If your user is using IE and has MS Office installed on his machine, it will work without any extra effort. I guess it works for some other browsers too but I never tried out. The solution would be too browser specific... some browsers might pop up the Open/Save dialog for the documents and it is not a behaviour which could be controlled using Java.

For your case, a simple HTML could also do the trick.
