I changed my career from a mechanical engineer to a senior Java/J2EE developer in 2 years and a technical team lead for a large insurance company in 3 years. It does not really matter, how many years of experience you have but what really matters is how much you know and how you perform in your Java/J2EE Interviews. Currenlty I am contracting as a technical lead/Architect for a large investment bank [with 5-6 years of Java/J2EE experience]. I usually get multiple job offers, which allow me to negotiate my rates. Large companies involving mission critical projects pay good rates for the right candidates.
