Talking is direct connection possible with java?

Sorry for such a juvenile question, but I am new to the Java scene.

I was wondering if it is possible to create a client/server system within a Java Applet.

For example, I would like to allow visitors of my web-page to be able to share files directly between each other and not use the web-server as the middleman.

From what I have read, this is possible through the use of servlets, but those are not a part of applets.

    Any ideas? thanks a lot.

An applet, probably not due to security rights and restrictions. An application yes.

Look into the java.net and java.io packages.

This looks like a good article.
