need help connecting to sql server 2000 on from client

i have a server running sql server. on the server i can create databases just fine but i am trying to connect from a client machine on the network. can you please help me with some instruction on how to connect to an instance of sql that resides on a server( win 2k). i have tried googling for some help with this but have had no luck. it seems like such an easy task but i have wasted all day trying to figure this out.

Are you trying to connect using query analyzer? or .Net? or Enterprise Manager?

i am trying to connect using vb.net 2003 and also have tried vb.net 2005 but no luck with either.

i also tried using sql server express 05 on my local machine and cannot connect using vb.net 05 the message i am getting with sql server 05 is "An error has occured while establishing to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections(provider:named pipes provider error 40:-could not open a connection to SQL Server"

For this i have went to sql surface area configuration and enabled remote connection for tcp and also tried tcp/ and named pipes. However I get the same error message. any help is appreciated
