please tell me i'm wrong!
Hi All,
I have just loaded VS.net wrote my first trial c# app, and built a deployment
set... and got a HUGE shock.
am i wrong, or do i need to have my users download a 20MG file (dotnetfx.exe)
just to run a "hello world" app????
surely i am wrong, who will adopt this platform if there is a 20 MG isntallation
hit for the first .Net app?
help!!

Re: please tell me i'm wrong!
I read that later Microsoft OS will have the .NET framework included. Also
apparently it is planned to be part of WinXP Service Packs.

You users will need to install the .NET runtime redistributable at a
minimum. And yes it is a 20MB image. It is similar to the requirement for
either the JRE or the JDK before you can run Java applications.

My personal opinion is that the benefits of .NET as a development and
runtime platform outweight the discomfort of needing the 20MB runtime. MS
has plans to ensure the 20MB file is as widely distributed as it's OSes or
IE but only time will tell how aggressively MS pursues this.

Mark,
Are you serious about distributing your "hello world" app? I mean are your
users willing to buy your app if you get a 10 KB runtime?

Re: please tell me i'm wrong!
That was my initial concern but having given more thought to it, I don’t think
that the size of the .NET Framework is necessarily a great issue, after all
most software is distributed on CD so an extra 20mb shouldn’t be a problem.
Most corporations have a ‘standard build’ for their PCs. For example, I once
worked for a company who’s standard build included the installation of the
VB runtime files and ADO 2.1 onto all their PCs. How are you proposing to
distribute you application and how do you do it at present and what size
is it?
Once an application (when compressed) is larger than the limits of 1.44 mb
(floppy disk size) and 2-3 mb (email attachment limit) it really makes no
real difference if the distribution size is 6,10 20 mb. As already pointed
out, the Java runtime environment is 10 mb (compressed) which isn't distributed
with Windows XP I believe.
The big issues are: can PCs where I’m deploying my application install the
.NET framework and what will the impact be (e.g. will it slow the machine?);
will it affect any applications already installed; and knowing what the current
issues/bugs are (and their solutions) with installing the framework.

Re: please tell me i'm wrong!
You can think of Microsoft including the .NET Framework with the next OpSys
as an extension of OpSys services. What's another 20MB in Windows 2000 which
already consumes over 1 Gig of my hard drive!?!?

Re: please tell me i'm wrong!
Does anybody know how long it takes to install that 20MB something? I hope
it does not take too long. I installed Visual C# standard edition on a
1.8GHz Pentium 4, and I believe it took over 1 hour.

Re: please tell me i'm wrong!
Installing just the runtime takes a couple of minutes on an average machine.
I think it took longer to instal MDAC.

I just went to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads to look for(dotnetfx.exe).
I saw the install for directX and the Java VM, but no(dotnetfx.exe)!
Sun has had an <object> tag for applets, that you can embed in an html page,
and it will install the Java VM on the end user's machine. Why hasn't MS
made the .NET install easier to find?
