Runtime error '3170' Couldn't find installable ISAM

    Me again,

I'm getting the above error message after I upgraded our software to use Access 2000 instead of Access 97 (still with DAO). Our other software has the same upgrade routines but the new versions use ADO to access the database and not DAO like this program does.

Also worth mentioning is that this error only occurs on Windows 2000 but not on XP

Anyone got any ideas what this error means or how to fix it?

Thanks for that Phil but I haven't really been able to locate anything that may apply.

If I go through the issue in more detail:-

The problem only occurs on Windows 2000 when upgrading a previous version of our software that used Access 97 databases to our latest version of software which uses 2000. If I install the software from new then it works fine! Also, as I said, it only appears to occur on Windows 2000 and not on XP where it works fine.

Could I be missing a driver or something? Is this a .dll thing?

In the meantime, I'll keep scouring google to see if I can find anything

Why are you using Access 97 Databases in 2007?

I suspect that if you upgrade those databases to at least 2000, preferably, 2003, this problem will go away.

Sounds like Windows 2000 doesn't have the necessary version of DAO installed. I would follow the instructions in this article to compare a system that works with a system that doesn't: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301202

The new software upgrades the Access 97 databases to Access 2000 so I don't think this is the problem but I will have a look at the DAO versioning as this could be the problem.

I might also try updating the VMWare Win2k machine that I'm testing this release on to the latest service pack to see if that does anything

Ok, so you have step one done.

Step two is to upgrade from DAO to ADO.

You probably need to install the latest version of the Jet database engine:

OK, I found an easy way!! I installed SP 4 on the Win2K machine and it fixed it! (strange how it works on a new install but not from an upgrade)

Now not many of our customers are going to be using Win2K and if they are they'll probably have the latest service packs
