    Database System Question

I have used Ms Sql for years, MySQL when needed, and SQLite on embedded machines. I am now in a position where I have a very small application (3-5 users) that must share a database on their internal network. The problem is SQL 2005 (or I guess 2008) is to expensive, the software isn't under GPL (and ADO is a requirement of the project, written in a .NET language) so MySQL is out (I believe), SQLite doesn't perform well on network shares. So does anyone have any ideas? I just don't know what to do. As far as I know compact edition cant be used this way. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Augury,

Why not use the free SQL Server 2005 Express Edition?

There is no reason not to. That is most likely what I will use. I was mostly curious if people had other suggestions. Thank you for taking the time to answer though.

I would be interested to know what information you heard that would lead you to believe this.

To my knowledge, Compact Edition does not support concurrent connections from remote machines. CE was designed against multiuser environments as far as all of my experience has told me.

Have you looked at PostgreSQL? They have a oledb driver.

Also, unless you are making changes to MySQL code, the GPL license should not preclude the use of it as a DB.

No, this project requires ADO usage, and MySQL ADO connector is under GPL.

But unless you make changes to MySQL ADO code or distribute your program, GPL should not matter.

    http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.txt

"To protect your rights, we need to prevent others from denying you
these rights or asking you to surrender the rights. Therefore, you have
certain responsibilities if you distribute copies of the software, or if
you modify it: responsibilities to respect the freedom of others."

"For example, if you distribute copies of such a program, whether
gratis or for a fee, you must pass on to the recipients the same
freedoms that you received. You must make sure that they, too, receive
or can get the source code. And you must show them these terms so they
    know their rights."

Except you have to distribute your code anywhere you use GPL code. So If I make use of MySQL ADO, my understanding is, anywhere I use it I have to distribute that code.

But, you have a small customer base so a simple installation and setup package to distribute the code which would connect everyone to the individual MySQL database would seem the way to go.
