What is the DAT file? Is it just straight, plain, text?

The DAT file is Not a standard format. Each application that uses it has it's own format, so there is no way to convert it with some built in utility, except for winmail.dat which is Outlooks version of and e-mail in RTF format.
If you want to import a DAT file you will have to write your own converter/importer. One that specifically works for your kind of DAT files. It would not work on other DAT files. Only the ones that are an exact format match to your DAT files.
    Sorry

I have seen folks store pure text, not as a .txt file, but as a .dat file

It is still a text file, but with a different extension, and can be opened with Notepad.

Bottom line is that just because it has a .dat extension really doesn't mean that much. We need to know what kind of file it is.

    Just a guess...
    Code:
    Name Path & "Name.dat" As Path & "Name.xls"
So long as, like Hack said, the formatting of the file is compatible, for example, comma separated variables

As Hack was implying, the file name is not the issue. If the contents of the file is akin to a csv (comma separated variable) or some other format that Excel can import, then conversion is not necessary.

The next question is how you are invoking Excel. If 'double-clicking' on the file, and it is in a format that Excel can recognise, then change the file extension accordingly.

If your DAT file is not recognisable to Excel, then you will need to read it and create an output file that Excel can recognise.
