    How to detect user activity?

Is there a way to determine if any keyboard or mouse activity has occurred in a predetermined time interval? I'm trying to find a way to automatically disable my programs edit mode if there has been no activity (i.e. person entered password enabled edit mode & walked away). The timer part is simple. I haven't been able to determine how to reset the timer based on any activity.
