Tile Based Maps

I really need help i stopped programming in java for a while cause i could never figure out exactly how to make tile based maps. I could use a tut to explain every thing going on but cant find anything that really shows how to do it. I have no knowledge of how to make them so if any one has a tutorial or can show how to make a simple tile based map it would be so helpful. Please have simple examples (like a small map with different colors).

I cant really figure out how to do it from there. I could really use example code and a break down of whats doing what. I dont really need a breakdown, but it helps me understand it better. By the way thanks for helping.

I poked around some more and was able to find the code in the the "session 7.zip" file here:

This may seem like an odd question; May the methods used in the applets also be used in an application?

In my brief experience with applets, it seems that they often use methods that aren't appropriate for applications.

Yea i just ended up downloading the .class file and decompiled it because i couldnt download the .java for some reason so im just gonna look at the code now thanks.
