Component Manager MSI file Client Installation
I'm not sure this is the right place for this, but I loathe
cross-posters...
I've created a COM+ component, and hosted it in the Component Manager
on a machine running Windows 2000. I created an "Export..." MSI file
with CAB for the client proxy installation.
This MSI file works fine from other Windows 2000 machines, but it
won't work from NT 4 or Win98. When I try to install it the MS
Installer says I need a later version of a service pack.
I'm already using SP6 on NT 4.0.
So, two questions:
- How can I install these MSI files on non-2000 clients
- If I can't, what is the best way to create an alternative client
installation that will work on NT and Win98?
I didn't find anything on this at all in the MSKB or the MS web site.

Re: Component Manager MSI file Client Installation
Jim
Non-windows 2000 clients need Windows Installer to be installed on them BEFORE
they can take in any msi files. The easiest way (that i know of) to install
the Windows Installer is
When you use Visual Studio Installer to create a setup program, there is
an option to place the windows installer itself in it.. when you run the
setup program, it will search the non-windows 2000 computer to check if windows
installer is already installed. if not then the setup program will install
the Windows installer..
Windows Installer technology is also supported by Installshield 2000 software..
hope this helps

Thanks. This is on a machine that does already have the windows
installer on it though. It came from Office 2000. I also downloaded
the installer from MS's web site, and installed that, but the machine
was still not able to install MSI packages created by Component
Manager.
I'll try creating a setup using the PD&W from VI to see if that makes
a difference.
