VFP7... last version?????
HI,
I heard a rumor telling that VFP 7 will be the last version of Foxpro that
Microsoft will devellop???? Is it true or is it only a rumor?????
Thanks,
Sylvain Bujold

Re: VFP7... last version?????
The interesting thing is not that it's most definitely only a rumor, it's to
see how the rumor gets passed around. Where exactly did you hear or read it,
magazine, colleague, boss who's been to a conference, you wife's best
friend's teenage hacker wonder? Why are you prepared to believe it?

Re: VFP7... last version?????
Sylvain,
Unless you are willing to provide the name, position and email address of
the person spreading this rumor, please don't ask. All you do is perpetuate
"wishful" statements by non-VFP developers.

Sylvain, with all due respect. Give it a rest, okay? You've been around long
enough to be as sick of the "Fox is dead" rumors. They're silly and don't
belong on a technical ng. Post to a chatter group, if you must.

Re: VFP7... last version?????
Well, I don't want ennemies but I want to explain... I know that it sounds
stupid and of course, it's not Mr. Gates that called me and said: "Hey, Mr.
Bujold. VFP 7.0 will be the last version of VFP.".
You're right, this is not really the kind of question to post on this discussion
group but who can tell me better than people like you???? It was just a QUESTION.
I don't want to give the name of the person who told it, but he is director
of a big company, using VFP for their main product and this company is partner(I'm
not sure of what kind of partnership though) of Microsoft so....
He said that it was a RUMOR. But I just wanted to have a confirmation because
here, we use ONLY foxpro (and 3rd Party Products) so anything around foxpro
interests us. I never said that it WILL be the last. I don't think either
it will be since it would be non-sensed but, lots of things are non-sensed...
Hope I'll not start any other flame. I just wanted put some water on fire.

For the record, I feel the same way about _all_ rumors. Whether it's "Fox is
dead," or "Margaret Thatcher wears army boots." <g>
What in the world makes you think that we, who are in the same situation you
are, can tell you? That decision would be made by people who don't hang out
in newsgroups. As Jim Booth says: "Those who know, can't say; those who say,
don't know."
<broken record>
And, <sigh> this will only encourage you, but so what if it is the last?
Let's see...it's not due out til next spring, and each version has a
lifespan of...um...people still are using FP for DOS. So, let me put it
this way: our time is better spent actually doing our work, and learning
about other languages and techniques, since EVERYTHING is guaranteed to
change eventually.

Re: VFP7... last version?????
To all,
I dont mean to perpetuate this stuff, but I find it comical that this
'rumour' has been around since I've been monitoring these NG's (5 or 6 years
I think). With every released version of FP, its always the same... "I heard
this is the last version of FP".....
I'm sick of it too. Viva La Foxpro....

Re: VFP7... last version?????
Perhaps he meant that the "fox is dead" rumors will soon start. That
is probably true.
If he, as a leader in a large company with a lot of dollars and effort
tied up in FoxPro, is actually asking this question, or passing a
rumor along, then my opinion of him is very very low. The other
possibility is that he has a reason why he would like the folks he
associates to think so. Does his wife work for a company whose
software could replace FoxPro in his shop, and he would stand to get
rich off making the switch?
For me, the proper response would be that I don't participate in
perpetuating such rumors.

Re: VFP7... last version?????
For the 10 billionth time...no. Here's a statement from the MS web site
regarding VFP 7.0:
"The role of Microsoft Visual FoxProŽ in Windows DNA has been solidified by
the database development system's ability to make fast, data-intensive
Component Object Model (COM) components."
VFP 7.0 is shaping up to be the most significant release since 3.0.

Hey, a couple of year ago I heard that VFP 6 would be the last!

Re: VFP7... last version?????
The rumors are absolutely correct. 6.0sp3 *is* the last, until 7.0 is
released. Then 7.0 will be the last. After that, I'm betting on 8.0. I guess
there are those still waiting for 4.0.

I think it's worth noting that several of the features shown in New
Orleans this week for VFP 7 significantly strengthen VFP's position.
The integration of VFP 7 into the Visual Studio shell takes away a lot
of the sense that VFP is a step-child in VS. I think a lot of
developers who get VS7 are going to find VFP in there and take a look
at it. (For that matter, it's happened a fair amount with VS6.)

Re: VFP7... last version?????
Hi Lew,
I was on the Microsoft Beta Test for VFP 4.0 - became 5.0. I actually have
about 3 CD's - various versions of the Beta - that are Labeled "Visual
FoxPro 4.0" --
How's that for a collectors item

Tamar...you're absolutely correct. Being inside the VS shell will definately
help VFP.
