Learning SQL2000
Hi,
Here's an easy one for you:
What would be the best way to learn SQL2000 for a person coming from an
Access background? (Buy your book? ;^) ) I've used Access for some time as a
DB, but almost always with a VB front-end so I haven't done much "Access
Application" development such as macros, VBA code, etc, just some basic
forms and reports.
I don't need to learn the system admin tasks, as those will be handled by
the IT staff. What I need to learn is how to deploy and maintain a database
on SQL2000. Should I take a class, buy several books, try one of the
CD-based classes, use MSDE first (I won't have access to SQL2000 for several
months) or just sit down with a reference book and start hacking away?
Thanks!

Re: Learning SQL2000
The only thing my book assumes is that you already have some understanding
of programming - which is sounds like you do not. I still suspect that you'd
get as much out of my book as any, but you may want to start with a
beginning programming book of some variety first (to get the concept of
variables, procedural programming, control of flow - stuff like that).
From there, it's probably no surprise that I recommend my book. While the
title includes the word "Professional", it's really a compendium of both
basic and advanced SQL Server development aspects. It starts at the
beginning and goes to the end (if there is any such thing).
BTW, if you have access to SQL Server 7.0 (you said you wouldn't have 2000
for a while), remember that my 7.0 title is still available (indeed, with
2000 being new, the 7.0 version still is the better seller between the two).
I still recommend it as the book of choice if you're going to be focusing on
7.0 for more than just a few months - otherwise, the discrepancies between
features will drive you crazy (hey, why can't I get this to work? Because
it's not supported under 7.0!).
HTH,
