JavaScript - turn off error message sound

In a text box, after the user types some text it is natural to press the return
key for some response. I have captured the event with onKeyPress=\"codes(event)\"
and act on char 13. However there is an anoying alert bong which is always
present in the text box on pressing the return key. Can this be toggled on/off?

Thanks, sorry if this is the wrong group.
