Need professional advice

Is functional knowledge of specific applications / industry required for making
entry in java programming? how would certification help?

Specific application knowledge is not necessary. When you get to a site they
will train you in the application. You just need to know the language.
This specific knowledge is always a bonus though.

Now, it is very useful if you already know the industry so you can spot intelligently
errors to avoid and such. For instance if you understand accounting quite
well you will be picked over someone who does not if the application you
are being asked to help on does accounting things.

Certification is useful if you have experience to back it up. It is also
useful if they need a reason to choose between two people of the same experience
level. They will pick the certified one because it shows vested interest
and a desire to learn.
