    Oracle newbie.... need help

I'm having some problems with my Oracle 8i Personal Edition for Windows 98.
I can't seem to use any of its functionalities aside from the SQLPlus. Do
I use the Net8 Easy Config to get a Net Service name for my database? I can't
set up any names because the test reports this error - TNS: No listener.
Then for the default Net Service name that was pre-configured, the testing
reported TNS: Protocol Adapter error. From JDBC, I get all sorts of exceptions
after the call to get a connection.

I just want to use Oracle to store some data that I need for my project for
testing. My question is: How do I create a database in the simplest manner
and have it ready to be connected to by a JDBC program. I plan to use servlets
to access the database. Please help. Thanks for your time.

I am a newbie myself. My questions were similar to yours. I was just attempting
to get to the sample database. Then, I would proceed to creating my own.
This is no where near as intuitive as MS SQL. I managed to get mine working
    by:
    1. Look in Init*.ora files to find Database name.(probably "Oracle"). This
is the ServiceName for the db.
    1. Using Net8 Assistant.
    a. Create a Listener (default name of LISTENER).
    b. Mine didn't start correctly sometimes.
    A. To start manually, in DOS: lsnrtcl start

    2. Create a ServiceName to connect to the db. I believe I had to name this
differently from the db Servicename found in the .ora file.

    3. Connect normally through your app, using this ServiceName.

If you are asked for a SID, it is probably "ORCL".
