    Java and XML

anybody figured out how to determine byte position of an XML element when
using the SAX parser (on the begin or endElement methods)?

You mean "this element begins at position 3027 of the input file"? I very
much doubt that that's part of the SAX specification.

If you are using SAXParser just implement the content handler and increment
your own character counts. If you are using JDK1.3 use DynamicProxy to proxy
over the defaultHandler and in each contenthandler interface method increment
    the character count.
