I have a Javascript array "ar"

it was initially declared
var ar = new Array()

In a function i need to empty this array. If I declare this array again
with var ar = new Array() the scope of the variable is only inside the
function.

What is the easiest way to clear or reset the contents of the array so that
scope stays at the global level??

thank you

in advance
