best java IDE ?

I am new to java programming. I was wondering if any of you could suggest a
good java IDE for linux and windows platforms. Also it should be free of
cost.

Definitely try netbeans.org. I've been using it for a couple of months now.
Picked it up fast and doing jsp/java satisfactorily. Worked with Jbuilder
4 for about a year but gets expensive to do anything beyond basic. Eclipse
has good reviews but I'm ex VB and just didn't "get" eclipse - if you are
coming from unix/linux may be no problem. There is a beginning movement to
make new modules compatible between netbeans and eclipse. netbeans IS slow.
But the price is right. Key is the concept of "mounting" files. Basically
means "point to". Must mount jar files using archive menu item. Enough.
