Can't help with any dutch books. As for Java books in English, there are
3 excellent books for beginners. Two I have read, one I just picked up as
an excellent reference. First, if you're completely new to Java, try "Teach
Yourself Java 2 Platform in 21 days" by Lemay and Cadenhead. Java has been
a fairly tough language for me to learn, and I've learned several including
Powerbuilder. This is a well paced book with excellent editing and examples.
If you are coming from a more technical background, pickup Bruce Eckel's
"Thinking in Java". You can download a copy for free from www.bruceeckel.com.
He previously wrote an award winning book on C++, "Thinking in Java" has
won several major awards. A caution: the author provided several comparisons
to C++ which caused me to pick the book up and put it down...it was just
too hard for me. After I read "Teach Yourself..." and did the exercizes,
then I read Mr. Eckel's book and found it to be superb. Finally, do yourself
a favor and look at "The Java Developers Almanac" by Patrick Chan. You'll
find it an invaluable reference, perhaps the best $20 you'll ever spend.
