I am currently reading "Thinking in Java", by Bruce Eckel. It's on Java2,
and is very clear - I've only got experience in VB, not C or C++, but it's
    still very clear!

Download Java SDK (free) from java.sun.com.

I am using Core Java 2 Volume I - Fundamentals (Cay S. Horstman and Gary
    Cornell)
and it seems to be good (ISBN 0-13-081933-6).

I recommend www.bookpool.com for good prices on books.
Search on Java and it will give you a list of Java books.
