    Best book on Java

    Folks,

I am just starting to learn Java. In your opinion, what is the best book
on Java for a self learner. I will appreciate your response.

    Thanks,

    Josh

depends on what "kind" of java you want to learn..........while the langauge
is all pretty much the same, an understading of differnet elemenst of the
j2ee specs provides different skills in the language.

If I was you I would start with Bruce Eckells thinking in java, free and
    online to download.

    Hi, Josh,

I am relatively new to Java myself, but I can tell you, having bought just
about every book on Java around, that there are two books that are a must.
First, Java in a Nutshell 3rd Edition, and Java Examples in a Nutshell 2nd
Edition, both by David Flanagan, are essential to have. The first is a great
desktop reference for the latest version of Java. The second is a companion
to the first, and gives not only great examples, but is commented superbly.
All of the source code for the examples is downloadable from the authors
    website, making coding much easier.

As for a book to learn Java with, I have found that Beginning Java 2 - Jdk
1.3 Edition is the best for me. The author, Ivor Horton, has a style that
makes the book actually interesting to read. The companion website has discussion
forums and mailing lists that the author actively participates in.

Hope this helps you in your learning,

    Mike
