Where To Start Java?
I'm sure this has been asked more than once...so, I'll keep it really short.
Newbie with VB6 background. I'm tired of the MS software trap. I have been
studying Java for a short time, and wish to pursue it more seriously. Have
gone through "The Java Tutorial Second Edition," by Mary Campione & Kathy
Walrath. Good book.
Still, I would like a book that mixes their insite in Java along with more
Hands-On Development. Maybe a project that I build to demonstrate the given
lessons.
I've seen the various Java lesson on CD offered by KeyStone Learning
Systems.
Any comments on KeyStone, or any recommendations on some good hands-on
tutorials. Time, not price, is the only issue.
Thanks,

Tom,
Please check out the "From Scratch" series by Jesse Liberty. Each book in
the series teaches you skills while you build a working project. The book
also has a long chapter on analysis and design. Here's a description of the
Java 2 From Scratch book.
Java 2 From Scratch
by Steven Haines
Que 1999 ISBN 0789721732
Learn all the critical programming concepts and techniques associated with
the language in the context of creating a functioning Stock Market Tracker/Analyzer.
Each chapter builds on the previous with a casual tone, in-depth examples,
and detailed steps to ultimately create a working stock market tracker. Key
areas addressed are user interface design, SWING user interface, Internet
communication, file I/O, painting/drawing, and brief introductions to JDBC
and RMI.
