stock ticker

I'm in the process of learning Java. I want to create my own stock ticker
and run on my desktop as an application. Can this be done, and can anyone
point me in the right direction to get started?

I know they already exist through Yahoo, AOL, MSN, etc. but I want to learn
how to write my own.
