Help with layout manager and panels

I am working with an excercise in the Dietel book 'How to program in Java 4th edition. There is an excercise on chapter 12 that has the reader program a layout with some components that match their example. I know I am missing something easy, but I am completely stuck as everything I have tryed does not match their picture. The excercise is 12.8. If someone that has this book could send me the code, I can then move on with my life....please I cannot sleep, I cannot eat....I have nightmares about this. Help!

I have the 3rd ed. of this book. i think they are almost the same, but i can't seem to find my book. can't you just post the code?
