    linux login

    Hi all,
I've encountered several times that I couldn't login to my linux account.
So when I logged in as linux single, the system time was right(usually when
the time doesn't match, users can't login). After I reboot it, I could login
again. Anyone has a clue about what the problem could be?

    Thanks!

Try leaving a virtual console logged in and displaying syslog (tail -f /var/log/messages) then when it stops working, switch to that
vc and see if there are any erroneous messages.

As a novice linux user, I wonder if you could tell me what 'linux
single' refers to? Is this the same as logging in as root or something?

    Thanks, Chris

Single tell linux to go to a shell prompt (some distros require the root password to do this). It is normally used for system
    maintainence.
