Regarding Adapter Error

I was trying to install Oracle 8i whic I downloaded
from the net www.Oracle.com
Now when I began to access the Data Base by entering the
User Name=scott and Password=tiger it displays me the error
Protocl Adapter Error.
Please write to me the steps involved in entering the data

Have you set all the environment variables correct ?

which platform are you using ?

You shuld run tnsping in the dos promte.Then u find exactly
error and create new database with use other name.
