Re: jpg files r changing into exe
do you mean they are changing without your consent? if so, it sounds like
some malicous code is running on the box.
what OS is this? is it a server or a client machine? is it one machine, or
many?

Re: jpg files r changing into exe
Sorry for the late reply - I only just saw your post.
I believe the infamous "I Love You" virus has a secondary, less publicized
"feature" - it renames your jpg files into *.jpg.vbs
Don't know if this is related.
Best bet - scan your systems with an up-to-date virus scanner.

I seem to recall this happening to me sometime. I am not sure if it was related
to I love you or not. (I wasn't infected.) I know this seems a little to
simple and maybe you already have thought of it but try renaming the file.
Take the .exe off and see if it works. That was my problem at least. If that
helps anyone let me know. I would be interested to see if that was the problem
or not. (Just don't send me the file. I don't do attachments.)

Re: jpg files r changing into exe
I've seen this happen not with .exe but with .vbs extensions and it infected
our network causing major problems. It's definitely malicious and you should
not try to open them anymore. Run anti-virus scans on all machines. I believe
this is related to a "Jokes" "virus" which is a variant of the love bug "virus."
Used to be in the good ole days you had to be pretty bright to create a
virus, these days all you have to do is copy someone's stupid script and
change a few lines. *grimmaces*

Re: jpg files r changing into exe
Unless I am totally mistaken, the viruses referred to sent .vbs file attachments
in email, but used names like "joke.jpg.vbs" such that the ".vbs" would be
hidden either by a long filename or by the "hide extensions" feature of the
OS. The purpose, of course, was to make someone believe they were opening
a JPEG file when they were in fact launching a VBS script.
