Outlook - retrieve highlighted mail item

Hi all you expert vb/api developers,

I need to know how to retrieve the sender's name and subject heading of an
Outlook mail item - the Outlook object model doesn't include a 'SelectedItem'
property of the Items collection so it needs to be done through API calls.
I know that the object that displays the mail items is a supergrid control,
but I don't know how to access the control's properties through the API.
Using Outlook 97 on Windows NT4. Can anyone help?
