now we made some changes to our database and those guys have already entered
some data in it now i want to make both the database similar and we have
around seven clients so what should i do in order to make a master database
out of all seven and also
send them the latest database.how do i work with multiple database like this
can some one explain me
Re: working with multiple database
What I have done is use a 'model' database which is updated then distributed
to customers with each new version of the software.
The model database contains the date/time it was created in a control table
record. Each time the user runs the application it loads the control record
from the model and if the date/time is different than their database's
date/time I dynamically update the user's database.
This involves iterating thru the model comparing all tables and fields,
queries and relationships. For example, if a new table is provided then I
add the table with all its fields. If a field is missing then I add the new
field. If any query is missing then I add it. And lastly I look at the
relationships and update them if necessary. It takes about 15 to 30 seconds
to do the update on a pretty large database - 100 tables, 250 queries. After
making all updates the date/time found in the model is stored in the user's
database - so the update is not performed again.
In the update code I usually have special situations. For example some new
field needs to populated. This is a good place to perform that task. The
step is only performed once.
If you are interested I'd be happy to write the update routines for you
charging my standard fee...
